Crabtree, John

A Concise History of the Parish and Vicarage of Halifax in the County of York

Published: Hartley and Walker, Simpkin, Marshall and Co., London

Date: 1836

Frontispiece, xiipp. + 563pp., 15 illustrations (including a double-page plan of Halifax and a plan of the Borough of Halifax) + fold-out table, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, leather boards with 'tree bark' effect, raised bands to spine with titles blind stamped in gilt. Contents very good with just a touch of foxing. Boards also good, just a little rubbed at the edges and a touch scratched. Spine ends a bit worn and there is some parting of the top and bottom of the spine from the boards. A detailed, illustrated history of the parish of Halifax (from pre-Roman times to the modern era) and its trades, population and government. It also covers Halifax itself along with: Northowram, Southowram, Ovenden, Hipperholme-cum-Brighouse, Sowerby, Warley, Midgley, Elland, Greetland, Barkisland, Fixby, Norland, Rastrick, Rishworth, Soyland, Stainland, Heptonstall, Erringden, Langfield, Stansfield and Wadsworth. A delightful, and comprehensive, title!
