TOWIE (1835)

Thomas Dix.

[Complete atlas of the English counties]. Essex, divided into Hundreds, and the Parliamentary Divisions.

Published: London: William Darton & Son, [1835].

Date: 1835

Linen-backed, col’d map, 19 x 15½ inches. Some old staining to verso; sl. age darkening to left-hand margin of map, and small indent near the bottom of the right-hand margin. Two instances of old insect damage in the second and third panel down on the left-hand side (see pictures), scarcely visible when the map is laid flat. Complete with the original card case and armorial title plate.

The Atlas was published in 1822 having been completed by William Darton after Dix’s death in 1813. When the Atlas was re-issued in 1835 the maps were offered for sale individually, dissected and linen-backed, and folding into card covers, as with this example.

A very attractive copy.
